2018 Recap Blog

As we approach the end of 2018, our community is astounded by all of the incredible things the Father has done in the last year.  2018 was a huge year for us, filled with upgrades in every area from workflow to building projects to our relationships with one another.  Here’s a highlight reel of some of our favorite moments from this year!

One of the major highlights of our year was the 2018 discipleship season.  From May to November we had 13 incredible Phase II students from all over the world come for a 6 month season of closer discipleship and deeper transformation.  They blew us away with their humility and courage to pursue vulnerability and wholeness.  We also hosted the most incredible 18 Inch Journey yet this autumn.  This year’s Phase I school was our biggest yet as we were able to accept 8 more students than year’s past.  Many of you helped make this possible by contributing to our Campus Campaign and helping us build our newest cabin: Maple.  Thank you again to everyone who invested in our dream of discipleship—we watched Phase I students have their lives radically transformed and we couldn’t have done it without you.  At the end of our school we had 23 baptisms in the chilly October waters of Lake Linda—23 hearts who encountered the unconditional love of Jesus and were transformed on this land!

In addition to our schools, we also hosted our 4th 18 Inch Journey Adult Retreat and another High School Camp.  These two events are major highlights for our team as we get to expand our focus from young adults and watch the heartbeat of the 18 Inch Journey affect other age groups.  These camps and retreats leave our whole team full of wonder and humility; we are amazed again and again at all that God can do in just a few short days.

2018 also held 3 Carolina Worship Nights with some of our dearest friends.  In March we went to Greensboro, NC to spend a night lavishing Jesus with our worship with our dear friend Steffany Gretzinger.  In June we returned to the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro alongside Jason Upton for one of the deepest and sweetest worship nights we’ve ever hosted.  And finally, in November we traveled to Charleston, SC with Amanda Cook for an evening marked by hope and resurrection.  That same November evening we released Molly Kate Skaggs’ single “Ain’t No Grave”—a song that has quickly become an anthem to this community and a declaration of our freedom.  If you’ve not checked it out yet, we encourage you to give it a listen!

Another first for us in 2018 was hosting our first ever Phase II Collective Showcase.  This event was the first ticketed event we’ve hosted at A Place for the Heart, and it was an incredibly special evening as we welcomed so many people to come experience the creative classes and projects pursued for the first 4 months of their school.  We loved watching people’s faces light up as they interacted with pottery, dark room photography, printmaking, music and movement created by our students.

Other highlights of the year included redesigning and expanding our garden, a staff beach trip to Bald Head Island—made possible by a few very generous people who opened up their beach homes to us—and the release of our latest Cultivate book, Volume V: The Art of Connection, Part I.  We capped off the year with an intimate Open House event for some of our supporters where we ate and worshiped together, shared testimonies from our year and casted vision for our year ahead.

As our ministry is growing, so is our gratitude.  We are astonished by how many people have made generous contributions to our ministry, purchased goods from our store to help sustain our ministry, or come out for a worship night or event on our land.  Thank you for your incredible support and generosity in making 2018 such a fruitful year!

It is our desire to continue growing as we approach 2019.  We have so many more dreams in our heart for our land, our schools, and our creative projects, and we cannot do them on our own!  We are joyfully confessing our need for help, and if your heart is stirred, here are a few different ways you can get involved!  One of the biggest ways you can contribute is by making a donation through this link or placing an order from our Cageless Birds store.  All donations and proceeds from orders sow right back into the ministry! Another great way to support us is through prayer.  We would love to have you partner with us by asking the Father for increased provision, favor, inspiration and wisdom.  Thank you to everyone who supported us financially and through prayer this year. The Father is doing incredible things and we are so grateful to be a part of it!
